A living family archive • Still growing as new footage turns up

Case file No. 1990-B1 · Living archive

Before there was the Bear, there was Mark Maddocks

Utah Jazz fan. Dancer. Dad.

  • Cold case. Hot dance moves.
  • No crime. Just missing videotapes.

He got the crowd on its feet. Now we're finding the footage that brings those Salt Palace nights back.

Exhibit A · The footage

Watch Mark dance

April 12, 1990 · Lakers at Jazz — identified by Jordan

How Jordan knows: same shorts in the NBA clip and the article photograph; a BEAT LA shirt that, Jordan says, the Salt Palace made for that game; the score and game clock visible in the video.

No. 02 — As remembered by his son

Meet Mark

Mark Maddocks is Jordan Maddocks's father — a Utah Jazz fan and a dancer.

Jordan remembers his dad being brought onto the court many times, rallying the crowd, and appearing in TV spots.

This archive gathers those memories and searches for the footage, photos and print that may still exist, so the moments can be seen again.

The goal is to recover the footage and surprise Mark with it. (Shh — don't tell Dad.)

Dashed strings are suggestions or referrals — a name on the board doesn't mean that person was contacted.

No. 04 — Calling all witnesses

Have a memory, photo or tape?

If you remember Mark at a game, or know where an old broadcast might be hiding, tell Jordan in the conversation you already have with him. The date, the opponent and where it came from are the three clues that help most.

  • January 25, 1990 Knicks at Jazz. Research lead for the article's “New York game.” Not stated in the article.
  • Game identification. Identified by Jordan from the outfit, game-specific shirt and scoreboard clues; archival metadata not independently authenticated. The Tribune article was published April 26, 1990 — that is the publication date, not the game date. Public result: RealGM box score.
  • Video rights. Supplied by the NBA for personal, noncommercial family use. Jordan chose to include it in this family archive. Separate NBA permission for wider website sharing has not been established.
  • Article. The article does not state an exact game date. January 25, 1990 (Knicks at Jazz) is a research lead, not an article-stated fact.
  • Family hope. One day the family might also ask the Utah Jazz whether a halftime recognition could ever be possible. That is only a family hope — nothing has been requested, arranged or endorsed.
